Family Name (also known by fans as The Show Must Go On) is the final song that appears in The Mezzo Sopranos opera, as featured in the episode "Smooth Opera-tor". Originally, a different song was intended to play in the final act, about the decisive confrontation between Antonio as the Mezzo Soprano against the invading Baritone; however, Murphy's Law has wrecked the opera so much at this point, that the Baritone's original actor has ditched the opera, leaving Milo no choice but to fill in for the missing role, for Amanda's sake.

Family Name, in contrast to the other three songs, appears to be largely improvised because of this last-minute decision, seemingly going into a different direction than was originally intended; in it, Milo points out to Antonio that despite the Mezzo Soprano surname, they all sing in baritone, making them technically the same as the Baritone family, ending the opera on a union between the two families and giving the story a happy end.

Antonio: Come on, Baritone, it's time for a fight
Step out of the shadows and into the light

That was your cue, we haven't got all night

(interlude)

Milo: I'm over here!

Antonio: You're shorter than I remember
Milo: It's the physique that I was cursed with
Antonio: I'll admit that I'm confused
You're not the one that I rehearsed with

I think we've gone off book,
Now I believe the scene we're botching
Milo: But I feel we should go on
Because there's all these people watchiiiiing

(beat)
Antonio: (spoken) Hm, ai severa immagino[misheard 1]
(singing) So I guess that you're a Baritone
And now we have to fight
I'm a Mezzo Soprano, and it all ends tonight!

Milo: Actually, you sing between a tenor and a bass
And that makes you a baritone
Your hostility's misplaaaaced
Antonio: (spoken) Say whaaaaaat?

Milo: Mezzo Soprano is your family name
Antonio: (spoken) That's right!
Milo: But you all sing in baritone
That makes you all the same
Antonio: (spoken) Wait a minute

(singing) Mezzo Soprano is a family name
But we all sing in baritone
That makes us all the same
(spoken) You're right!

Everyone: Mezzo Soprano is our family name
But we all sing in baritone
That makes us all the same
We are all baritones!
Antonio: (spoken) Hey, that was pretty good.

Milo: Diogee, go hooooome!
Antonio: Farrara, hara faccia, farraina![misheard 1]
(spoken) ...what's with the dog?

Trivia[]

  • Despite the lyrics, neither Milo nor Antonio sing in baritone. In fact, they both sing in countertenor, the highest male voice type. The vocal range of the countertenor voice is equivalent to that of the female voice types contralto and, ironically enough, mezzo-soprano.
