Plot[]

The opera starts in Little Italy with Antonio, portraying the boss of the Mezzo Soprano family, complaining to his brethren or underlings that a Baritone has entered his delicatessen shop without permission, threatening to punish him thoroughly, such as soaking him with spaghetti sauce and getting him to wake up with a [Charley] horse.

Later, Santino, portraying one of Mr. Mezzo Soprano's underlings, notices the Baritone singing on their turf, thinking he wants to fight their boss. Fredo, another Mezzo Soprano member, threatens to give the Baritone laryngitis if he doesn't look out fast. The Mezzo Sopranos proceed to declare a music war to the Baritones.

In the next scene, Antonio is with the actress who portrays the therapist of Mr. Mezzo Soprano. To her, Antonio tells that the Baritone is not singing in his key, explaining the rivalry between the Mezzo Sopranos and the Baritones, and noting his anxiety about the music war he's got himself into. As he begins to monologue the issues he's had with his mother, the therapist excuses herself, stating her time with him is up and the therapy session is over.

In the final act, Antonio stands alone and challenges the Baritone to come out and prepare to fight him.

Milo's version[]

During the events of "Smooth Opera-tor", several things start to go wrong during the opera session with Milo's presence backstage, causing the original actor for the Baritone to leave. Believing that the show must go on, Milo decides to take the original actor's place as the Baritone for Amanda's sake.

This altered version of the final act is largely improvised. In it, Antonio immediately notes that Milo is not the actor he had rehearsed this part with, to which Milo counters they have to go on regardless due to their massive audience. Antonio accepts Milo as the new Baritone, and continues where he had left off, challenging Milo for a final fight as a Mezzo Soprano. However, Milo points out that that Antonio sings between a tenor voice and a bass voice. He elaborates that, despite Mezzo Soprano being the family name for Antonio's role, Antonio himself, and the other actors, sing in a baritone voice, making the Mezzo Soprano family technically the same as the Baritone family. A unification between Mezzo Sopranos and Baritones takes place as the opera ends on "We are all Baritone".
