|“||Plus, I've got a blockage in my fourth chakra.||”|
— Mort Schaeffer, "Rooting for the Enemy"
Mort is very spiritual, practicing New Age beliefs, such as knowing the properties of rose quartz and talking about having a blocked chakra. In "Going the Extra Milo", it is possible he may be a vegetarian, as he wagered his "vegan cheese sticks" to see if Milo and Zack would make it to school on time. Unlike Bradley Nicholson, he acts more civil around Milo, and treats him like a friend; he even came to Milo's birthday party. Mort and Bradley seem to be friends and are often seen together, though Bradley's condescending attitude and lack of understanding or agreement with Mort's beliefs occasionally leads to friction.
Mort is much taller and stockier than the majority of the students. He has a long, rounded face with a prominent nose, light skin, and dark eyes. His brown hair is shaved at the sides and the back, leaving him with a thick mohawk.
He wears a dark, navy blue T-shirt over a pair of blue jeans with folded cuffs. His shoes are red sneakers with white soles and gray laces.
In first grade, Mort was larger and taller than the other students his age and still had the same haircut he does now. He wore an open beige jacket with a brown collar, brown cuffs, and three brown buttons over a navy blue shirt.
Mort also wore a pair of light blue jeans and a pair of red sneakers with white soles and gray laces. He had a blue backpack with black straps.
As a young child in first grade, Mort went to John P. Trystate Elementary school alongside Milo, Melissa, Amanda, Chad, and Bradley. During the bus ride on his first day to school, Mort watched as Milo revealed the contents of his backpack, and then continued to watch in excitement when Murphy's law sent Milo and Melissa on a ride behind the bus.
In "Going the Extra Milo", he placed vegan cheese sticks and an apple on Zack and Milo not showing up until after lunch. He lost the bet when the two were beamed to class by aliens seconds before the bell rang.
In "The Undergrounders", he attends the class field trip to the natural history museum. He witnesses Milo, Zack, and Melissa being separated from them when their subway car disconnected from the rest of the train. While at the museum's gift shop he perches a large quantity of rose quartz. He was present when the three missing students and the lost city workers return to them.
In "Rooting for the Enemy", he invited Milo to his first football game in months, before falling in a dumpster which rolled into a lake. He is in the hospital's Murphy suite to congratulate Milo after he used Murphy's law to win the game for their school team.
In "Sunny Side Up", he is teamed with Bradley and Amanda for their science project.
In "The Llama Incident", he has a job lifting flesh colored bags of red paint in a forklift.
In "Some Like it Yacht", Mort and his class go on the school board's yacht and becomes stranded on an island where he was the only one not freaking out. He also frees a crying Bradley after he was stuck to the galley's cabinet encased in ice cream during the beaching before returning to the mainland after being shipwrecked.
In "World Without Milo", he is seen crossing the street to school.
In "A Christmas Peril", he is seen sharing a meal with Amanda, The Murphys, the Underwoods, and the Chases.
In "Snow Way Out", he is seen on the bus to school and in first period.
In "Teacher Feature", he is seen sitting with Bradley and Amanda.
In “First Impressions”, he is seen in a flashback goi to his first day of school.
In “The Speech and Debate League of Death and Destruction Cross Town Explosion Event”, he and Chad hold up round cards for The Speech and Debate League of Death and Destruction Cross Town Explosion Event.
Mort appears to be good friends with Chad, and the two are often seen spending time together outside of class. Mort seems to be the student most easily influenced by Chad's constant theories and tends to put serious consideration into his 'evidence'. When Chad lists out the information he'd collected in trying to prove that Mr. Drako is a vampire, Mort admitted that he was beginning to think it could be true. During Picture Day, when Chad mistakenly takes Milo as a vampire, goes to Mort to help gather evidence, which Mort easily obliges to.
On Halloween, the two of them were tasked with setting up a party together but acknowledged that the children were going to be disappointed by their lack of effort.
Mort is on friendly terms with Milo. Unlike most of the other students, Mort has an easygoing attitude and doesn't tend to worry too much when it comes to Murphy's law. This, combined with his personal beliefs, lead him to blame his misfortunes around Milo on a blocked chakra rather than Murphy's Law. The two of them are both members of the band Just Getting Started, with Mort on drums and Milo on accordion.
Mort is on friendly terms with Zack. They are both players in the Jefferson County Middle School football team, and the two of them are a part of the band Just Getting Started, with Zack on lead guitar and Mort on drums. During their first live concert, Mort initially took Zack's reassurance to heart, calming himself down at his request. He was quick to forgive Zack for treating his bandmates badly and related the experience to a dance movie cliche.
Mort seems to be on friendly terms with Bradley and hangs out with him on more than one occasion. They worked on the same group project alongside Amanda, although Mort had to remind Bradley that they were on the same team after he'd been included in the latter's jeering. Mort argues against Bradley when he disregards his beliefs, claiming that Bradley would understand his need for Rose Quartz if he knew its properties.
Mort and Amanda are classmates and seem to be on friendly terms with each other. They were on the same team alongside Bradley during a group project, and during the school dance, Mort helped Amanda remove Milo's shoe from some glue. The two of them sat together and talked during Christmas Eve dinner with Milo, Melissa, and Zack's families.

“If you understand its property, you won't be asking me that.”
“Woooooow; this is like one of those movies where there's one dance team from the streets and one dance team is classically trained, and they're both gonna do this competition. But then the street team runs out of funding, so they have to raise the money. And then the classically trained dancer leaves the other team and joins them and teaches them the value of hard work!”
“Yeah, because when the classically trained ballerina returns to the street team all repentant, not only do they win the dance competition, but they all learn the true value of their friendship.”
